Birth of a notion

Once again, science has provided humankind with the answers to questions we never realized we asked in the first place.

According to a recent study conducted by scientists at the University of California-Santa Barbara, men whose partners have just given birth tend to feel more attractive.

One theory is that men get a boost to their egos because they feel more masculine witnessing a mini version of themselves enter the world. Plus there’s the fact they didn’t have to pass a human watermelon through their birth canal in front of a bunch of strangers.

Another possibility, say researchers, is that men who are seen in public holding newborns often receive positive attention from the opposite sex, which is especially the case if that man is shirtless, Beckham-esque and photographed in muscle-accentuating black and white.

The study examined 182 newlywed adults, both men and women, and asked them to rate how attractive they felt before giving birth and then immediately after giving birth. And guess what, dudes tended to like what they saw in the mirror, whereas women who had just been in labour for umpteen hours… not so much.

Speaking from personal experience, whenever we’ve stood beside someone screaming and grunting in pain, sweating profusely and expelling various liquids and/or objects from their body, we’ve tended to feel far more attractive than that person. Just saying. And we didn’t need research or a scientific study to tell us that. In other news, there is still no cure for cancer.
